6th Grade Band

Welcome to the JMMS 6th Grade Band page!

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Welcome to the Jane Macon Middle School Bands! I am excited that your child is a part of our program. The 6th grade year is a vital year for band students. Your child will learn many new concepts and skills as they pertain to their instrument, as well as pride, teamwork, self-discipline, and dedication. This year promises to be a great year, and I am delighted that your child will be a part of it.

All students in 6th grade begin on Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, or Trombone. During the Fall semester, we will begin auditions for all other instruments. These other instruments require fundamentals to be taught on specific instruments. Please refer to the following chart if your student would like to play another instrument:

* If you start on flute - you can later audition for oboe or bassoon
* If you start on the clarinet - you can later audition for bass clarinet, contra clarinet, bassoon, alto sax, tenor sax, bari sax, or french horn
* If you start on trumpet - you can later audition for euphonium or french horn
* If you start on trombone - you can later audition for euphonium or tuba
** If you start on flute, clarinet, trumpet, or trombone - you can later audition for percussion

We will begin playing instruments as soon as they are delivered after you have rented them from either Portman's or Horns Up. If your child is selected for an instrument that they already have at home, I will make an announcement when they will need to begin bringing it to class.

All 6th grade students will need to bring the following to class every day - instrument (including mouthpieces, neck straps, and reeds), Essential Elements for Band method book 1, and a 3 ring binder with sheet protectors for music and worksheets distributed in class.

Please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Guilbeau if you need anything throughout the year.
