DEVELOPING NOTE-TAKING SYSTEMS In class today, you studied some note-taking samples and identified a note-taking strategy you thought would work well for you. Let me give you a few more tips to help you make your note-taking as powerful as possible: • Note-taking should only take 10% of your reading time (or less). That means if you read forty minutes tonight, you should only spend four minutes jotting notes, no more. • Note-taking should be brief. Use abbreviations. Jot in incomplete sentences. Your notes should be much, much shorter than the book you are reading! • Information you jot down should be essential. It will often tie in to the central ideas in the text. • Note-taking should prepare you for talk. Jot things you want to talk about later with your club. As you read with you learning community, will you set aside three or four minutes of your reading time to jot some powerful notes? Remember that most of your time should be spent reading, so you’ll still get through twenty-five to thirty pages in your book.

SESSION 3 CLASSWORK
DETERMINING CENTRAL IDEAS
As you read today, stay on the lookout for your book’s central ideas and pay attention to the methods you use to find them. In some books, the headings lead straight to central ideas. In others, the central ideas are more hidden, and you might have to try other methods, like looking closely at how details fit together. Take a few minutes and jot about the central ideas you find. Please type your responses to this assignment.
